As an independent contractor or freelancer, what unique and interesting methods have you used to find new transcription clients?

I don't know how "new" my methods are, but probably the best way to get new clients is word of mouth, referrals from clients you've gone above & beyond for in the past who see you as offering something that nobody else does, whether it's your fast typing or quick turnaround or--my fave--your expertise command of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. It took me a LONG time to get to the point where I have about 20 regular clients, I started my business back in 2005 after losing my job. I started out by working for transcription companies to gain experience and improve my skill. Then, ever so slowly, I picked up a client here and a client there and did the absolute BEST job I could do for them. I proofed & reproofed and made sure the work I turned around was as close to perfect as possible. I've since gotten many, many new clients from past clients whom I've done excellent work for. Plus, those first clients are repeat clients. Every time they have a new project, they know I did an awesome job, my prices are very reasonable, and I will get the job done when I say I will get it done, if not before. That's key. Once you get a client, you want them to come back to you over and over and over again. That way, when they know somebody who needs your services, they will automatically know your name and refer them to you. "Oh! You need something typed? Jennifer is wonderful! Let me give you her email." I have clients who continually come back again and again because I offered what they couldn't get anywhere else...good service, fast turnaround...my slogan is, "Done Right...the FIRST Time!" and I stand by that.

Otherwise, in terms of advertising, I paid A LOT of money to join my Chamber of Commerce for networking. I paid A LOT of money to advertise my business in their directory. I did not get ONE new client.

To date, my 2nd best way of getting new business, aside from word of mouth referrals is my Web site. A good Web site that is easy to find and local to the person looking for your services will work wonders! I've gotten tons of business off my Web site. Check it out!

Word of Mouth is THE BEST way to get new clients. Referrals from existing clients. Once you get a new client, do your utmost to keep them happy, then, when somebody they know needs services that you provide, they will recommend you. I`ve gottn TONS of business from referrals. Plus, the clients you keep happy will come back to you again and again and again for repeat business.

Another fairly cheap way to get people`s attention is to get a Web site. I can`t stress this enough! A Web site reaches essentially millions of people, or at least thousands. When I get a new client, I ask them where they found me and 9-out-of-10 times, they say, Oh, I found your Website! Be sure to have a Contact Me page where they can email you directly from your Web site.
