As a transcriptionist, a computer crash could be devistating.  Hours of typing could be lost in a second.  What backup solutions do you use to keep your work safe while you're typing it and then for short or longer term storage?

I have had a computer crash due to both a virus and a lightning/T-storm so I know firsthand how devestating losing data could be and, frankly, what a pain in the a?? it is to fix the problem. I currently use two types of backup systems. One, the easiest thing to do is get yourself a portable, plug-and-play hard drive. All you do is plug it into your USB port, upload the softward, then back up your system. That way, whenever you need something, you have it right at your fingertips. I also use the backup hard drive as a storage unit for my music, videos and photos which can take up a GINORMOUS amount of space on your hard drive. This way, it keeps your hard drive space down and you still have the files you need.

#2. I also use online backup sites, like, Norton for Word docs mainly and photo sites like Kodak, Snapfish, etc. to keep a set of your photos safely stored online, so that if you have a virus or a computer problem where you need to reformat the hard drive,  all you need to do is go to the site and redownload what you need.

Regardless of what backup you use, if you ever need to reformat your hard drive due to virus or any other problem, it's still going to take A LOT of time to have to reinstall all your software before you can redownload your files from your backup source. So, be sure you always keep some kind of antivirus software on your computer at all times and don't let it expire. It could be a MESS and a lot of man hours to fix something that maybe didn't have to be fixed.

Both Windows Vista and Windows 7 offer a backup utility that can back up your PC image to an external hard drive with a few mouse clicks. This same utility can be used to back up specific files/folders, etc.Go to Control Panel; Backup and Restore. It's there and it's free.    -    edwardatngtinc 8/25/2010 4:48:39 PM | Flag
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out when I do upgrade to Windows 7. Currently, I'm still running Windows XP Media Edition because I heard the horror stories about Windows Vista and did NOT want to go there. I've heard that Windows 7 is a BIG improvement over Vista and plan to upgrade in the future, but for now, I'm good with Windows XP. I like it and it works. And I'm happy with my external hard drive for backup.    -    JenzTranscriptionServices 8/25/2010 8:50:45 PM | Flag
