I work from home as a transcriptionist and have a 9-month-old and a 4-year-old.  Any tips on getting on a schedule so I can work in peace?

Well, the best suggestion would be to get someone to help out for a few hours during the day with the kids.... the 4-year-old will be in school soon (yes?), so that will leave you with the 9-month-old, and then a playpen in the room with you where you can watch the baby but not necessarily have to constantly attend to the baby is also a help...Lots of toys (educational, of course), and a good video playing softly on TV for sounds.... it`s the only way I survived as a home MT with little ones!!!

Working from home is not all it seems, especially with children. I loved my transcription business and did quite well with it but eventually I had to get an office outside of the home in order to get anything done. Everyone seems to think that if you are at home you must not be working and have all sorts of errands for you to do. I eventually went back into a physician`s office after 9 years of working on my own so that I could have benefits, insurance, etc. Couldn`t be happier now! I hav

I agree with that statement about people thinking that just because you`re at home that you`re not really working. I can`t tell you how many times my mother will call me just because I`m home when I repeatedly tell her that I can`t be interrupted. I can`t ignore the call either, because she`ll call my cell, then my home, then back and forth until I finally answer. Drives me crazy! As far as working with kids, I find that since my daughter is in school now it is much easier. I also get a

Oh my gosh, that is sooo true - the fact that people think just because you work at home, its not a real job. They think you can just work whenever you want, take breaks whenever want, etc. They dont understand that you really have to push yourself, stay focused, and work hard because you have turn-around times to meet. As far as trying to work at home with kids, you definitely need some type of daycare or help. I have a 4-year-old (plus an 18-year-old and 13-year-old). My mother-in-la

I have a 2&3 yr old and I am an MT IC for only a year. I found it much harder when they were 1&2..OMG I did not get any sleep. I was a newbie with babies and that was so not fun. I learned through trial and error of balancing my life. I am working toward a BA degree in Medical Records so I had lots of work on the computer. It is still challenging as they are very young still, but it is so much easier now. I gated my home and toddler proofed the area we spend time in. I work on a l

I am also an MT working from home...and I have a question for all of you who posted above: what company did you all start working for when you were first out of college as a new grad? Who gave you your first break as far as working from home with little or no experience when you were first starting out?

My kids are 12 and 14 and it`s no different than having little ones really --they think that because you`re home, you`re available for whatever they want/need, husband included. Almost makes me want to hang a do not disturb sign on the side of my headphones.

I started out as a medical secretary in which transcription was a major part at Maryland Medical Laboratory, which is now Quest Diagnostics. I worked there for 4 years, then got a job, where I am currently, with Medical Records Corporation, as soley a transcriptionist. I already had pathology experience from working at the Lab, and they trained me on radiology as well. I started at MRC in 1988 and I am still working for them. I worked in the office originally, but when the technology came a

Wow...some of these comments have made me think twice about even thinking of working at home. I was in a lay off after 12 years in February and have been thinking lately of maybe doing some transcription PT at home, I think I`ll reconsider that now...

I worked for a physicians` office for 16 years before taking their transcription to do at home. I think I have typed for every orthopaedist in this town, except for a select few, at one time or another. I have a great reputation with the orthopaedists therefore I never had any trouble getting business. I became so busy, I had to hire help but that only caused problems because everyone only wanted ME to do it. Finally got too busy to handle it all, so gave it up and went back into an office do

I transcribe mostly in the evenings and very early morning so that I can spend my other times on the tennis court! Working at home has really given me so much free time and after 5 years I`m now making just about what I was making working fulltime as a school secretarfor 18 years...and with none of the nonsense to deal with! I love it!

I worked in the field for 5 years and have been at home now for 6 and absolutely love it!!! I came home to work when my son was in the 3rd grade... got to go to all his school funcitons and was home to take him to school and pick him up!!! I love being a medical transcriptionist and would not trade my job for any other!! I make wonderful money, have all the benefits just like being in an office but am home in my office with no office politics and no office gossip :D
